When: January 24, 2018
Where: Westwood Presbyterian Church | 10822 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90024
Hello Westwood Stakeholders:
Happy New year to you and yours! We hope all of you are well and thriving in the New Year, so far. After a whirlwind holiday season, it is time to begin looking ahead to our community’s future, and volunteering for the Westwood Homeless Count 2018. The Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority (LAHSA), organizes the Los Angeles Homeless Count census each year. These census numbers are incredibly important as they open the door to much needed funding by the government and other sources to assist with all kinds of homeless services throughout our city. It is extremely important for the count to be as detailed and accurate as possible.
This year the count will be held on 3 days, January 23-25th. One day is for the shelter count, another day is for the youth count, and the day that we volunteer for is the overall homeless count that takes place within our own community on Wednesday, January 24th, 2018. We need your help! We have close to one hundred volunteers each year for Westwood alone, and our boundaries to count are Sunset Blvd. to the North, Santa Monica Blvd. to the South, Beverly Glen/ LA Country Club to the East, and Sepulveda Blvd. to the West. We also count the entire UCLA Campus, which as we all know is quite a lot of ground to cover. We need dedicated volunteers that diligently take the time to get accurate, honest numbers.
We will have volunteers arrive at the Westwood Presbyterian Church on Wilshire, and meet in Hoffman Hall. The address is: 10822 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90024. Please arrive at 9:30 PM. We will have food and drinks, and an organized check in process, and all supplies for the count. At 10 PM we will begin the count training, followed by a question and answer period. We will then begin to deploy our counting teams at 11 PM. You may wonder why we choose to do this at such a late hour on a Wednesday night. We have learned, over the past 4 years, that many of our homeless community members do not begin to shelter down until after businesses and buildings have closed, and as people head home. We have found that performing the count at this later hour allows us to capture more of an accurate number of individuals and families.
We would love to have you as part of this important Westwood tradition, and if interested to be involved with our homeless task force throughout the rest of the year. This is such an important issue to face head on, and find ways to solve. We look forward to innovative views, ideas, and passion to work towards ending homelessness in our community of Westwood, and throughout Los Angeles.
Please feel free to visit this link, where you may sign up to volunteer in Westwood for the Homeless Count 2018.
Please consider joining our large and dedicated group of volunteers. Be a part of your community, and meet some fantastic new people at the same time. We think you will find this to be an incredibly rewarding, and eye-opening experience. Pay it forward with us!
We look forward to seeing you on January 24th!
